Well done Kevin, so proud of you and all you've achieved this year. I can imagine the effort you've put into staying sober and it takes a lot of effort to stay the course, especially given the prevailing culture in the music industry. Well done as well on the paid work and how you've juggled that with your writing and music. Hope you have a happy, produtive and fulfilling 2024.

thanks. You wouldn't get me saying that the only good relationship with alcohol is none at all, but going forward I will generally avoid it without being fanatical about it.

Otherwise, every sip could feel like a death spiral.

This is the relationship I adopt with alcohol as well. I wouldn't necessarily encourage others to avoid booze even though I don't drink myself. I just choose every day to not drink for a host of reasons, the main one being that it is easier and better for me (financially and health-wise) to not drink than it would be to drink.

Wow, Kev, you've been so busy! I'm in awe of your productivity. Also, I'm so glad you found the Damian Keyes book helpful. I think he has a very sensible, clear-eyed way of looking at social media.

His advice will no doubt age quickly, because some platforms will go the same way as MySpace. But there's a lot of good stuff, I still have some way to go to implement his ideas.

Some of the things he encourages I just can't do, eg have an instant opinion about every news story (which this year has meant being one of those ghouls who speculates about Nicola Bulley or gloats about the Titanic sub), engage with celebrities on Twitter, and ask readers to Like and Subscribe.

Others I was uncomfortable with but did anyway, like Top Ten lists, and talking into the camera.

Becoming a minor celebrity would solve a lot of my problems and open a lot of doors, but in the words of Emily Dickinson: "I don't like the man who squanders life for fame, give me the man who living makes a name."

I know someone who both has an instant opinion on every news story and engages with celebrities on Twitter. He now has 6,500 followers as a result, but I don't know how he has any time to do anything else! I like that Dickinson quote.
